Strengthen teachers' professional expertise as the foundation for instructional decision-making with AI
Day 1 of the AI Literacy Collaborative brings together teachers, administrators, and community partners to build a shared understanding of how AI tools work, what their capabilities and limitations are, and how they can be used effectively and ethically in K-12 classrooms. Participants explore AI systems through hands-on experience, examine ethical considerations for classroom use, and learn evidence-based strategies for integrating these tools into teaching and learning. Through dialogue with students, parents, and industry partners, participants gain a fuller picture of how AI is already shaping their communities — and begin building the cross-district relationships that will support their ongoing learning throughout the year.

Building on the foundation established in Day 1, the second day shifts to the classroom. Teachers explore how AI tools can support the work they already do — planning instruction, teaching, and assessing student learning — through research-based pedagogical routines led by the California Subject Matter Projects. Participants practice using AI to draft and refine lessons, analyze student work, and design assessments, with an emphasis on keeping teachers' professional expertise at the center of instructional decision-making. Teachers leave with strategies they can adapt to their own grade levels, subject areas, and student populations.
